High-quality classroom talk is essential to pupils’ thinking and learning. It is also linked to improvements in reading and writing, and overall attainment. This session looks at how encouraging higher levels of quality discourse, and its associated cognitive development, is not solely an issue for the subject of English. After reviewing the most recent oracy research, we will cover practical ways teachers can promote socratic, dialogic and exploratory talk in the secondary classroom.
